With Fierce Wireless claiming 2020 was the year when “Open RAN got real” in a recent article, trials and deployments are set to increase in speed in 2021 and beyond. Open RAN brings with it the promise of being able to offer flexible and adaptable networks to provide services not only to individuals, but also to highly profitable enterprise clients. As we have begun to see at-scale deployments and trials, the panel will focus on the key learnings and challenges from trials and the challenges being faced. As carriers continue to explore the benefit and cost of deploying Open RAN, its business case is becoming increasingly clear, but there are still challenges to overcome from an R&D perspective. What is the benefit of disaggregated RAN infrastructure as next generation networks are rolled out? What is the real-world testing telling us about Open RAN network performance?

OPEN RAN AND THE EVOLUTION OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS INFRASTRUCTURE

Open RAN allows carriers to deploy open, flexible, reliable, and secure network architecture, but the way the network is designed changes drastically. Traditionally, networks have been largely rolled out using one vendor in order to avoid performance reduction when matching cell sites with different vendors’ hardware in them. However, in Open RAN deployments, the Radio Unit and Distributed Units are entirely separate, and can be procured from separate vendors. Whilst multi-vendor systems can be advantageous to the network’s performance, CSPs must now seek out the most effective ways to optimize the now separate DU, RU subsystems, and the open fronthaul connecting it all.  Given the complexity of ORAN deployments in macro networks, how far are we from seeing entirely open, end-to-end virtual network solutions and infrastructure in the real world? What are some of the most promising open fronthaul options available to carriers?

Cloud networking requires an entirely different network design approach to what CSPs have been accustomed to in previous generations. For incumbent carriers, Open RAN presents a great opportunity, but its integration into brownfield environments will be key to upgrading legacy networks. Interoperability is key to its success, but also the adaptation of the operating model to incorporate existing hardware with cloud elements. Open RAN will only be successful at scale if the vendor ecosystem expands and works together to deliver cloud-based solutions within common or interoperable standards and specifications. The development of open network infrastructure calls for collaboration, which can often be made difficult by fluctuating geo-political tensions, commercial tensions, and standardization challenges. The creation of end-to-end ORAN blueprints must be borne out of collaboration and vertical integration, as the concept of an open interface does not work without coordination. What can the existing ecosystem do to allow, and foster, innovation from players across geographies and company sizes whilst all working towards the same standards and specs? What are some of the key R&D advancements required to create a robust, interoperable, and complementary vendor ecosystem? Will multi-vendor networks become the “new normal” for future generation networks? How can programmability and SDN principles be brought into Open RAN planning for self-configuration and control of the radio access network?
