THE FUTURE OF END-TO-END 5G DEPLOYMENT MODELS

Cloud native network infrastructure is becoming synonymous with disruption in 5G telco markets. Ever since Rakuten’s surprising launch in 2018 of their end-to-end fully virtualized cloud-native networks, a world’s first, the industry’s eye has been set on how to build more virtual capabilities into networks whilst keeping CAPEX down as a result. The latest development in the space was the intriguing announcement of DISH’s decision to launch an entirely cloud-based, Open RAN 5G network in partnership with AWS. However, the benefits of ORAN and virtualized networks are also making an impact in incumbent carriers needing to tackle the significant cost of upgrading their networks and staying competitive. How will cloud providers continue to play a part and disrupt future network deployments and upgrades, as well as on back-end systems and processes? What impact will these virtualized networks have on the customer experience, and how can telcos and cloud vendors work together to increase customer satisfaction and retention?

2:00PM-3:15PM ET:
ENABLING NEW SERVICES AND SERVICE INNOVATION WITH A 5G CLOUD-NATIVE CORE

Whilst initial 5G deployments relied heavily on a 4G core for “good enough” service, as 5G becomes prevalent and used in more diverse and critical scenarios, a 5G core becomes a necessity. The cloud-native infrastructure allows for greater flexibility in service and deployment, allowing even for game changing technology such as end-to-end network slicing to be deployed across the transport, core and RAN layers. What new revenue streams and partnerships can telecommunications providers forge with more flexible, cloud native cores? How can these costly core upgrades be future-proof, as far as possible, for future generations?

5G AND THE FIXED WIRELESS OPPORTUNITY – DELIVERING BROADBAND TO RURAL AND REMOTE AREAS COST EFFECTIVELY

Whilst the demand for reliable rural broadband is not new, there have been several factors over the last 18 months which have brought this subject back into the surface. Firstly, the pandemic has resulted in a highly distributed workforce, now often located away from large urban centers, and highly unlikely to return. Secondly, 5G presents a solid alternative to the costly process of laying miles and miles of fiber to reach a few customers in remote settings. These factors have suddenly opened up the field for large investment in FWA and 5G convergence. Will 5G FWA ever make it to rural and remote deployment settings? Do the economics of FWA 5G in urban areas add up?

VERTICAL DEEP DIVE: 5G MANUFACTURING

Few industries have shown as much interest in deploying and incorporating 5G networks into their assets than manufacturing. 5G offers not only high throughput and ultra reliability, among other benefits, but the evolution of MEC and network slicing has increased the applicability of industrial network solutions at scale and cost effectively. Smart factories have already been using LTE to deploy their own private wireless networks, but the increased capabilities of 5G will build an even stronger proposition for large-scale use cases. Services such as automation, predictive maintenance, asset tracking, supply chain management and much more is only made possible with real time tracking and analysis on-site. The telecommunications ecosystem has found a willing and motivated partner in deploying innovative solutions at the edge to make factories and supply chains smarter, faster and more efficient. How can telcos continue to leverage their edge computing technology to build profitable and mutually beneficial partnerships with manufacturing firms, and beyond? What technical challenges remain in creating fully automated, safe and reliable networks within campuses, factories and even entire industrial settings?

11:00AM-12:15PM ET:
5G TRANSPORT AND BEYOND – FUTURE-PROOFING YOUR 5G DEPLOYMENT

5G requires greater backhaul capabilities, and site virtualization and distributed services mean not only an entirely new backhaul strategy, but an entire new set of technology. Engineering teams must think differently about the transport options available to them, and the significant investment in sites and upgrades means these need to be as future-proof as possible. How can MNOs effectively build 5G network backhaul to coexist with legacy network transport systems? What are some effective strategies in future-proofing this large investment in 5G transport for future generations?

TERAHERTZ-ENABLED WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS IN 6G: PAVING THE WAY FOR FUTURE NETWORK GENERATIONS

Thz spectrum frequencies have been earmarked as some of the most promising spectrum in delivering 6G requirements by bodies such as DARPA, the FCC and the European Union, to name a few. This high spectrum frequency can carry large amounts of data over a short distance, but much research remains to be done in order to tackle key issues such as propagation loss and interference. Terahertz spectrum is already a research focus for large organizations looking at future networks, but will the amount of R&D required prove prohibitive to make the most of this opportunity?

11:00AM-12:15PM ET:
TACKLING THE 5G DESIGN CHALLENGE – FROM THE CHIP TO THE DEVICE

The complexity of 5G lies not only on its standards, but on the transformation of the technology delivering connectivity, all the way from the core to the device itself. With an ever-increasing number of verticals finding ways to leverage 5G technology to improve their own services and processes, the number of sensors, devices and embedded systems available and in development is increasing daily. The challenge is not a small one – effectively design, test and deploy IoT technology across different settings and geographies, each with different requirements. From the chip to the sensor, the pressure is on to deliver quickly to meet ambitious deployment targets. How can the industry come together to develop successful testing processes to keep up with the demand for 5G connectivity? What cross-pollination can the industry take advantage of to reduce R&D cycles and build economies of scale across use cases? How will 5G device development and testing pave the way for future generations?
